Johnny Depp goes 'Into the Woods,' plus more theater buzz
WHO Johnny Depp
THE MUSICAL "Into the Woods"
THE DEAL It looks like Depp is likely to co-star in the forthcoming film adaptation of the Sondheim musical "Into the Woods," to be directed by Rob Marshall. But who will Depp play? Variety reported he would play the Baker, but The Hollywood Reporter said he was expected to play the Wolf, who stalks and then eats Little Red Riding Hood.
THE PLAY "The Commons of Pensacola"
THE DEAL Danner and Parker will headline the new play by actress Amanda Peet that will run this fall at Manhattan Theatre Club's Off-Broadway space at City Center. They will play the wife and daughter of a Wall Street scam artist now dealing with the aftermath of their family's financial fall and humiliation.
THE PLAY "Forbidden Broadway"
THE DEAL "Forbidden Broadway: Alive and Kicking," the newest incarnation of the long-running musical revue that pokes fun at new and classic Broadway musicals, shuttered recently after running a few months at Off-Broadway's 47th Street Theatre. However, a production source says the show closed only because of a lease issue and that plans are already under way for it to return in a few months, refurbished with new songs and sketches.
THE MUSICAL "Ever After"
THE DEAL The musical of the Cinderella-themed film "Ever After," which has been in development for years, is currently receiving a workshop production directed by Kathleen Marshall ("Nice Work If You Can Get It"), reports Playbill.com. The cast includes Sierra Boggess ("The Little Mermaid"), Jeremy Jordan ("Newsies"), Terrence Mann ("Pippin"), Tony Sheldon ("Priscilla, Queen of the Desert"), Jan Maxwell ("Lend Me a Tenor") and Jose Llana ("Here Lies Love").
