Big names could return to practice Sunday, or not

The Knicks’ practice Sunday could feature Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire together for the first time since mid-October. Or neither of them could practice.

It’s still unknown whether Anthony (hyperextended knee) and Stoudemire (knee surgery) will be able to go full. That was the Knicks’ hope, but Stoudemire has to be re-evaluated by team doctors before he can practice.

He was asked by MSG Network during Friday’s loss to Sacramento whether he’s still shooting to make his season debut Jan. 1 against Portland.

“We got to see,” Stoudemire told MSG’s Tina Cervasio. “Once we get back to New York, get re-evaluated by the doctors and see how everything goes – hopefully I’ll be ready to go by then. But it’s a marathon, not a sprint. So we’ll see.”

Stoudemire said his left knee “is feeling much better.” But, Stoudemire added, “It’s not where I want it to be right now.” He continued to say it’s getting better and “hopefully it keeps improving.”

The Knicks won’t put Stoudemire through practice or in a game if he’s not comfortable playing on the knee or they don’t feel he’s ready.

So if it turns out his season debut is Jan. 3 against the Spurs, or Jan. 5 in Orlando or Jan. 7 against the Celtics then that’s when it is because they want him healthy for the stretch run and the postseason and not for the first game in January.

That’s the same for Anthony, who hurt his knee against the Lakers. He said he couldn’t bend it or walk Thursday, but he felt better Friday and was hoping to play on Jan. 1. It's also possible Rasheed Wallace (stress reaction, left foot) could practice Sunday.

As Stoudemire said, we’ll see.
