And so it begins.

Amar’e Stoudemire’s injury has opened up the possibility to Mike Woodson playing different lineups depending on the match-ups.

This is not the ideal situation because you want to have the same starting five as much as possible.

But take tonight for example.

The Knicks could start Raymond Felton, Ronnie Brewer, Tyson Chandler, Kurt Thomas and Carmelo Anthony if the Sixers start Spencer Hawes and Lavoy Allen at the power spots.

If they start Thaddeus Young at power forward, the Knicks could go Felton, Jason Kidd, Chandler, Brewer and Anthony at power forward.

Woodson said the Knicks could play mix-and-match all season – but you have to believe that’s not what they want.

Good teams have a set team, a set rotation and you make adjustments for injuries. They don’t change things nightly.

“It could be that way all year depending on personnel and how we’re playing,” Woodson said. “I don’t want to see Melo have to guard big, big fours. He can. But it takes a lot out of him too. If they go small we can figure that out as we experienced that part last year.”

Tomorrow is a big day for the Woodson from a medical standpoint.

When the Knicks return from this three-game preseason trip, they should have updates on J.R. Smith, Rasheed Wallace and maybe Stoudemire and Marcus Camby.

Woodson said there is a chance that Wallace “could” scrimmage tomorrow, although it doesn’t sound likely. But Woodson at least made it sound as if he’s getting closer.

In Camby’s case, Woodson said the Knicks will continue to take it slow with his calf strain. Woodson also said, “I don’t know” when asked whether Camby would be ready for the Nov. 1 opener.

Brewer obviously makes his Knicks debut tonight. He had his knee scoped Sept. 7.

Woodson said how much Anthony plays tonight in his Syracuse return will be up to Anthony to a certain extent. He wants Anthony to enjoy being in front of his fans.
