Mike Woodson said Carmelo Anthony asked out of last night’s game before he fell and aggravated his right knee. Woodson said he was too “stubborn” to listen.

“I should have,” Woodson said on ESPN NY 98.7 FM this afternoon. “But stubborn coach, I just didn’t. We’re down 22, I’m going to leave one of my best players in the game. Maybe I should have taken him out before he actually stumbled and took the fall.

“Again I’m thinking the game. I’m thinking he’ll play through it, he’ll figure it out. But hey he was hurting. He walked out after he took the spill and he didn’t come back. That’s not Melo like.”

The Knicks haven’t given an official update on Anthony, who left the 102-97 loss with an injured right knee. But Woodson said during the interview that Anthony is “probably day-to-day. We’re going to evaluate him, let him rest today and see how feels tomorrow morning and go from there.”

The Knicks play the Pistons tomorrow night before returning home to face the Oklahoma City Thunder Thursday at the Garden.

After last night’s game, Anthony said his knee has been bothering him for a couple of weeks and that he had an MRI recently. Anthony said the MRI didn’t show anything, and they were trying to figure out the source of the soreness and tightness in the back of his knee.
