    Oh how prescient, with a major snowstorm on the horizon, that Tadashi Shoji opened his show at the tents on Thursday with a blizzard of snow projected on the runway. 

    But Shoji was referencing those tough Russian winters and his muse was Russian royalty in this luxe, elegant show that seemed full of fresh ideas while still conjuring the Russian Empire.

    Of note, long sleeves and capelets to warm you -- still sexy and sizzling -- but such a welcome change from the now standard, barely-there red-carpet dress. We swooned for a caramel-colored velvet confection with a slash of black lace running down the middle.

    A dazzling blue lace and white gown with a flounce cape was influenced, said Shoji in program notes, by the garb of Russian Orthodox clergy. There was folkloric embroidery along with sophisticated lace all turned out in ripe, luscious shades of burgundy and carmine red, an electric pop of sapphire and soft shades of blush, taupe … and, yeeks, snow.
