  • Ten Out of Tenn @ Canal Room, Sept. 30, 2009

Last night, I went down to the Canal Room to catch this neat little concert. Ten Out of Tenn is a collective of 10 musicians from Tennessee (clever, right?). Each is an autonomous artist, but they come together periodically to tour and release compilations and what have you.

So I guess last night's show was kind of a mini-showcase for the group. Everyone took a turn or two as the frontman to sing a song of their creation, and the band shuffled seats and traded instruments, depending on the needs of that particular song. The songs varied in style from down home country ballad to guitar-shredding rocker to bubblegum flavored girl pop to white boy rapping.

It was a diverse display, but everyone up there was united by tremendous talent; they all had fantastic voices, and their musicianship was universally tight.

The show was enhanced by the fact that all the musicians were clearly having a great time. Most everyone had a kind word for New York City when they stepped up to the mic, and there was just such a joyful, "let's put on a show"-type energy, that it was hard not to get swept up in the feeling.

By far, my favorite performance of the night was a young man called Mikky Ekko. (Give "It's Only You" a listen on his MySpace page.) His energetic delivery and vocal pyrotechnics captiveated the audience.

After the "last song" the group wrapped things up by coming out into the audience for a Bob Marley sing-a-long, singing "Three Little Birds" in angelic harmonies.
