The Big Career Switch: From professional trumpet player to acupuncturist
Who Pulled It Off: Greg Ruvolo, 56
What He Does: Ruvolo is a licensed acupuncturist who founded and directs
Sound Body and Soul, a holistic healthcare center in midtown.
What He Used To Do: Ruvolo toured with Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles and played the trumpet in Broadway orchestras, jazz clubs and recording sessions.
Why He Switched: "I loved performing, but the late hours and constant practicing can get stressful," says Ruvolo. "I became an active participant in my own healing process when I battled cancer in the early 80s. I decided to devote myself to helping other people get better."
How He Did It: "I studied with alternative-medicine practitioners and got a degree from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine," he says. "Then I got certified in acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and Asian bodywork therapy."
What an Acupuncturist Does: "At Body and Soul, I use tried-and-true acupuncture methods to treat private patients for a variety of health concerns. These include pain, migraine, insomnia, addictions, PMS and menopause," explains Ruvolo. "I also teach acupuncture at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine and the Swedish Institute."
Who Does This Job Best: "Acupuncturists and holistic healthcare practitioners need an open mind and a love of learning," he says. "A caring, compassionate nature is essential. And to have your own practice, you must be organized and a good networker."
How's the Money? "My bills are paid and my kid's in private school," says Ruvolo. "But I still can't afford a Manhattan two-bedroom. The real payback is loving what I do and helping people get well."
What About Perks? "Structured hours and steady paychecks are a relief for an ex-musician," says Ruvolo. "I find the time to play my horn. And Sound Body and Soul is a very supportive, loving community. Sometimes, patients who are performers give us free tickets."
What Else You Should Know: "Holistic medicine attracts interesting patients. Rock stars and famous actors have walked into my office. But people are people, and we all want to feel better."
