The Big Career Switch: From headhunter to home designer

Who Pulled It Off: Robin Wilson, 37

What She Does: Wilson is CEO of NYC-based Robin Wilson Home (www.robinwilsonhome.com).

What She Used To Do: Wilson was an executive recruiter who placed top international execs and bankers.

Why She Switched: "I felt stuck behind a desk, glued to the phone. I was helping others find their dream jobs while ignoring my own passions. Real estate is in my blood. When I was little in Austin, Texas, I used to go with my great-grandfather to visit his properties."

How She Did It: "The recruitment firm went public, and I got a windfall. I got a master's in real estate and started Robin Wilson Home in '00."

What A Home Designer Does: "I renovate and design homes, apartments, hotels and offices. I pitch projects, or clients come to me. I come up with floor plans, design concepts, materials, etc. Then I work with contractors to get the job done. I manage my team, make media appearances and work on books and licensing deals. I travel a lot. No pets, no plants, no kids."

Who Does This Job Best? "A CEO must have a vision, be a leader, work hard and work smart. A real estate pro has to be diplomatic and a people person--it's all about relationships. You must think outside the box and anticipate trends. Today's clients want flat, wireless and eco-friendly."

How's The Dough? "Real estate is a very hot field, especially in Manhattan. If you deliver what you promise, you can make a fortune."

What About Perks? "You're the ultimate insider. You get your pick of great apartments and furnishings. And there's a lot of gratification in this job, because clients are so thankful when their homes are transformed."

What Else You Should Know: "Your rep is everything. New Yorkers work so hard for our money, you can't be a day late and a dollar short."
