ISTANBUL TURKEY - JUNE 19: ) People stand in near the memorial stone for Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, outside the Agos newspaper building during a silent protest in the Pangalti district June 19, 2013 in Istanbul, Turkey. Performance artist Erdem Gunduz, nicknamed 'The Standing Man,' became a new symbol of the anti-government protests after a eight-hour vigil in Taksim Square. Gunduz reportedly said he was protesting in solidarity with demonstrators after they were evicted from Gezi Park that adjoins Taksim Square. The protests began in May, with environmentalists upset over plans to build in Gezi Park, and has grown into a broader demonstration against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government.

About Istanbul

Byzantium, later Constantinople and present-day Istanbul, was an ancient Greek city, which, according to legend, was founded by Greek colonists from Megara in 667 BC and named after their king Byzas or Byzantas (Βύζας or Βύζαντας in Greek). The name "Byzantium" is a Latinization of the original Thracian-Greek name Byzantion (Βυζάντιον; see also List of traditional Greek place names).
