amLatino 2007: Celebrating Latin culture in NYC
Puerto Rican Day Parade bigger than ever
Sunday marks the 50th anniversary of New York's National Puerto Rican Day Parade -- a celebration of all things Boriqueño -- from traditional folk customs to the popular reggaeton.
Dance the night away
Whether you love the sexy rhythm of salsa but don't have the moves or you're a mambo master looking for somewhere to dance the night away, there are plenty of places in the city to cut a little rug -- or pavement. Here are our suggestions:
Mets' other Pedro raps on culture, baseball
Over the past two seasons, Pedro Feliciano has emerged as one of the Mets' most dependable relievers. The left-handed sidearm pitcher from Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, had a 2.09 ERA over 60 1/3 innings in 2006. Feliciano, 30, is off to another great start this season, with his ERA at 1.77 (as of press time).
Mixing Latin (and Asian) culture with design
When designer Eduardo Xol walks into a room, he doesn't just see the space in front of him; he can almost hear music playing. And if the music doesn't sound right, he can tell there is something wrong with the design.
'Latinizing' children's stories
There's more than one version of the classic tale "Little Red Riding Hood." In Manuel Moran's world, a Latina Little Red Riding Hood eats the wolf -- who pretends to be the bad guy but is really a flamenco-singing vegetarian.
Latin American culinary tour
It could literally take years for a person to sample all of the Latin eateries in the Big Apple. So, in the effort to save time, start with these places on your journey from Brazil to the island of Cuba.
