In this photograph a baby elephant and its mother walk out of the jungle for their annual 'gathering' and leafy snack at the banks of an ancient artificial lake, the Minneriya reservoir, in the island's north central province. Dubbed "The Gathering" by conservationists, this annual event brings 300 elephants from neighbouring jungles, who come for food, water, shelter and match-making. From July to October, "The Gathering" -- as it is known -- gives humans the chance to observe the elephants feasting and frolicking on the water's edge.
