Drink to Wes Andersons latest flick with these specialty cocktails
Now you can toast Wes Anderson's latest flick in style.
Two hip New York hotels are marking the release of "The Grand Budapest Hotel," which premieres Friday, with specialty cocktails that pay homage to the film.
"Boy with Apple"
At the Bowery Hotel (335 Bowery, 212-505- 9100), you can sip on the Boy with Apple ($15, available through May 1), a cocktail made with Zubrowka bison grass vodka, apple juice, Angostura bitters and cinnamon thats inspired by the movies setting and plot.
Knowing that the movie opens up in the Republic of Zubrowka, an Eastern European nation, I thought the best spirit to use would be Zubrowka vodka, said bar manager Walter Easterbrook.
The cocktail further nods to the priceless Renaissance painting at the center of the film that a hotel concierge (played by Ralph Fiennes) attempts to recover.
This was the inspiration for the name and, of course, the main ingredient in the cocktail apple juice, said Easterbrook.
Its only fitting that, thanks to its idiosyncratic style, the Bowery Hotel looks like its straight from a Wes Anderson movie itself.
The Bowery features all of the nostalgic vintage charm and detail of a signature Wes Anderson movie set, said Bowery Hotel general manager Kirk Wilson. If his characters were real, I am sure some of them would be staying at The Bowery often.
1 1/2 oz. Zubrowka bison grass vodka
3 oz. fresh pressed apple juice
3 dashes of angostura bitters
In a tall glass add ice with vodka, fill glass with apple juice. Add 3 dashes of bitters. Garnish with an apple slice and sprinkle of cinnamon.(Credit: The Bowery Hotel)
"The Orient Express"
The Jane Hotel (113 Jane St., 212-924-6700), a sister property to the Bowery Hotel that was actually inspired by a Wes Anderson film (The Royal Tenenbaums), is serving up the Orient Express ($14) in honor of the film. Comprised of Domaine de Canton Ginger Liqueur, Pimms, soda, mint and cucumber, the deconstructed Pimms Cup pays homage to the long-distance train that served Budapest.
The ginger gives it more of a bite, and being that Pimms is lower proof, the addition of the Domaine makes it punchier, said Jane Hotel bartender Eli Luntz of the cocktail, which doesnt have an end-date on the menu. Weve opted to serve the cocktail in a martini glass so you look more stylish.
Wes Anderson wouldnt have it any other way.
2 mint leaves
1 1/2 oz. Pimms
1 oz. Domaine de Canton Ginger
Splash of ginger ale
Splash of club soda
Slice of cucumber
Muddle 2 fresh mint leaves in a cocktail shaker. Add Pimms and Domaine de Canton Ginger. Shake ingredients with ice and pour into a martini glass over a strainer. Top off with a splash of ginger ale and club soda. Garnish with a slice of cucumber.(Credit: The Jane Hotel)
