Coconut-cream soft serve at Sweetgreen
A new startup based in New York City, Kokus makes its soft serve with cultured coconut cream and raw honey. Whether or not it's "loaded with gut-healthy probiotics and enzymes," as the website states, we're certain it comes in two flavors, lemon-vanilla tart and raw cacao, and you can grab a free serving at three different Sweetgreen locations around the city this month. Head to the fast-casual's Upper East Side outpost (1500 Third Ave.) on Aug. 23 or the Williamsburg one (162 N. Fourth St.) on Aug. 30 before 7 p.m., when Kokus will dish out free soft serve to the first 100 customers to buy a Sweetgreen salad. The first 20 get their frozen treat served in a coconut.
A signature dish from a Michelin-starred chef at Chefs Counter Club
The SoHo restaurant showcasing quick-serve dishes from the dining world's biggest names is introducing a new lunch and dinner option from George Mendes of Aldea: shiitake rice with summer corn, sun-gold tomatoes and pickled watermelon. The first 100 customers to pick up a bowl at 62 Spring St. on Thursday, Aug. 17, starting at noon get theirs for free. Mendes drew his inspiration for shiitake rice from his mother's go-to summer recipe, Portuguese tomato rice, according to an email promoting the deal.
Bite-sized cupcakes from Baked by Melissa
Head to bakedbymelissa.com at noon on Thursday if you want to order a free 25-pack of the bakery's cupcakes. They come packaged in a gift box, so technically you should send them to a "special someone," but what's keeping any of us from proclaiming Aug. 17 "Treat Yo Self" day? Baked by Melissa is giving away 100,000 cupcakes in total, so act fast.
Update: A free Kokus soft serve comes with the purchase of a Sweetgreen salad, a Sweetgreen spokeswoman said Thursday. An earlier press release and version of this story did not mention that caveat.
