2014 TV Preview: New series on the way

More and more, January is becoming a hotbed for new series, and 2014 is no different. Here are some of the new shows to look forward to in January and beyond.

‘Helix’

Syfy

Follow some Center for Disease Control scientists as they’re in the arctic checking out a potentially deadly disease that could spell the end of mankind if they don’t resolve the problem. Starring Billy Campbell and Hiroyuki Sanada. (10 p.m., Jan. 10)

 

‘Enlisted’

FOX

Geoff Stults ("The Finder") is a top-notch Army soldier who is deployed to a military base for oddball troops in Florida after punching his superior officer. When he gets to Fort McGee, he finds that his hapless younger brothers (played by Chris Lowell, "Veronica Mars" and Parker Young of "Suburgatory") are stationed there. Delightfully in the vein of "Stripes." (9:30 p.m., Jan. 10)

 

‘True Detective’

HBO

This eight-episode HBO drama stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as a pair of Louisiana detectives. The series jumps around from 1995 to 2002 to 2012 and follows a tense investigation of an occult murder. (9 p.m., Jan. 12)

 

‘Under the Gunn’

Lifetime

The "Project Runway" mentor gets his own fashion competition series, where a trio of mentors (and "Runway" alum) — Mondo Guerra, Anya Ayoung-Chee and Nick Verreos — guide 15 up-and-coming designers through different fashion challenges. (9 p.m., Jan. 16)

 

‘Looking’

HBO

Jonathan Groff, who originated the role of Melchior in "Spring Awakening" (opposite Lea Michele and John Gallagher Jr.), stars in this new half-hour cable comedy about three gay friends living in San Francisco, all at different stages in their life, dealing with love, relationships and life. (10:30 p.m., Jan. 19)

 

‘Broad City’

Comedy Central

Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, veterans of Upright Citizens Brigade, star in this New York City set comedy series about a pair of 20-somethings living in the Big Apple. Amy Poehler is an executive producer, and she knows funny. (10:30 p.m., Jan. 22)

 

‘Black Sails’

Starz

‘Crossbones’

NBC

So you like Pirates, do you? This year, you’ll be getting a pair of new series set on the high seas with some salty rapscallions. "Black Sails" is a prequel to "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson, and is executive produced by Michael Bay (and others). "Crossbones" comes from the creator of the acclaimed BBC series "Luther" and features John Malkovich as Edward "Blackbeard" Teach. ("Black Sails," 9 p.m., Jan. 25; "Crossbones," TBD)

 

‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’

NBC

The late-night talk show shuffle has Jay Leno leaving, Jimmy Fallow taking on the "Tonight Show" and "Saturday Night Live" star Seth Meyers in the second slot.(12:35 a.m., Feb. 24)

 

‘Sirens’

USA

After doing a series about cops ("The Job") and another about firefighters ("Rescue Me"), Denis Leary now turns his attention to EMTs in this new comedy series. (10 p.m., March 6)

 

‘Penny Dreadful’

Showtime

Award-winning screenwriter John Logan ("Gladiator," "The Aviator," "Hugo," "Skyfall") taps classic literary horror characters such as Victor Frankenstein and Dorian Gray for this thriller series set in Victorian London. Starring Josh Hartnett, Eva Green and Reeve Carney. (Spring)
