Whoopi Goldberg to Host the Tony Awards For the first time in three years, the Tony Awards will again have a host. After Hugh Jackman's three successive hosting stints, the show's producers, unable to find anyone famous to take on the job, have axed the host spot altogether for the past two years. It was announced Thursday that Whoopi Goldberg, the newest addition to TV's "The View," will be the host. Goldberg last appeared on Broadway four years ago in her one-woman show "Whoopi."
"Glory Days" Closes on Opening Night The theater critics unanimously panned "Glory Days" following its opening on Tuesday night. For the most part, they wondered how such an undercooked, amateurish musical could have possibly made it to Broadway. Early Wednesday afternoon, Telecharge was suddenly no longer selling tickets to the show. By 5pm, it was officially announced that the show would never play another performance. "Sadly, given the overnight reviews and our low advance sales, we believe it is prudent to close the show on Broadway immediately," the producers said in a statement.
'August: Osage County' Recoups Investment Things keep getting better for "August: Osage County," Broadway's most acclaimed play. It received the Pulitzer Prize last month, which was no surprise to anyone. It moved to the Music Box Theater last week, allowing to play an open-ended run. This week, its producers announced that the show has recouped its $2.5 million investment. Without question, it will win the Tony for Best New Play, as well as probably any other award in which it is eligible.
'13' to Finally Hit Broadway "13," Jason Robert Brown's upbeat musical about a group of 13-year-olds, may finally be heading to Broadway. Bob Boyett, producer of "The Country Girl," revealed that not only does he plan to produce the musical, he intends to do it at the Jacobs Theater, where "Country Girl" is currently playing. "13" premiered last year in Los Angeles and will receive a developmental run in Connecticut this summer. Note that the musical has nothing to do with the 2003 film "Thirteen."
