Party animals — literally

"Boozehound" takes on a whole new meaning at any one of these dog-friendly drinking spots.

An air of intimacy pervades this charming France-by-way-of-East Village bar, which unexpectedly not only tolerates dogs but invites them with open arms. "Various bartenders have dogs and have always brought them around, so that's kind of how it started," says owner Charles von Herrlich, whose own pit bull, Happy, is known to roam throughout the bar. Uneven wood floors, subdued lighting and a nice glass of Chateau Ramafort Bordeaux complete the picture.

Epstein's Bar
An homage to "Welcome Back Kotter" character Juan Epstein -- not to Epstein-Barr virus -- LES enthusiasts will revel in this bar/burger joint's minimalist, unobtrusive vibe. At this time of year, when the doors stay open and the sidewalk tables pop up, the dog crowd surfaces. Sit around and imbibe any of the various drink specials, and feast on inexpensive yet sublime burgers (which can double as an impetus for Rover to behave).

Yaffa's Tea Room
Located in the center of Tribeca, Yaffa's affordability and easygoing vibe make it the perfect antidote to the other posh purveyors flooding the neighborhood. A smaller version of the East Village classic, the ample outdoor seating along Greenwich and Harrison streets allows for plenty of good people- and pet-watching while enjoying cocktails or light Mediterranean fare. Don't be surprised to see Yaffa, a minor downtown celeb, hanging out at the bar or mingling with the local crowd.

The Gate
At this cool and comfy Brooklyn beer joint, it's not uncommon to hear the words "What's your name?" or "You're so cute." But there's a better-than-good chance it's directed at your canine, since dogs seem to patronize this al fresco bar as much as humans. The outdoor area is the main draw and an ideal spot to chill on a sunny weekend afternoon. Hungry? Make sure to bring grub for you and your pooch, as The Gate doesn't serve food. Or you're welcome to order takeout from tasty nearby spots.

79th Street Boat Basin
When we called to confirm that they still permit pups on the outdoor premises, the Boat Basin supplied us with an enthusiastic "Of course! Everywhere!" One of the most dog-friendly spots in the city -- and with a stunning Hudson River view, grill stations and plenty of cocktails -- the Boat Basin's ambience is so laid-back and summery, you'll almost forget you and your mutt are chilling right by the highway.
