Seek references
The staff at the reception hall can often refer bands that have played there. But be mindful that there may be a conflict of interest at play. "Most locations have financial deals with bands that they recommend," said Josh Brooks, event planner and partner at Fete. For less biased advice, ask married friends and family for their recommendations.

Don't wait
Brooks tells his clients to pick a band soon after booking a location for their wedding. If the wedding is on a Saturday night during the busy summer season, the couple should reserve a band at least six months before the big day.

Spend wisely Bands usually charge by the member, so the bigger the band, the bigger the cost. "They tend to get $700 to $1,200 per person," Brooks said. If that's too much, hire a DJ for about half the price.
