Drinks and the city
'Sex and the City' cocktails: Mangosteen, available at Bistro Chat Noir (left); Bradshaw Cocktail, available at Bemelman's at the Carlyle Hotel (middle); Sambapolitan, from at SushiSamba. (handout)
"Sex and the City" did for the cosmopolitan what Daisy Duke did for short shorts. And with the movie premiering this weekend in New York, Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte wannabes will be out in full force, searching for the next trendy cocktail.
City bars and restaurants have taken note, concocting special creations that honor the female foursome (and their male co-stars). So, drink up -- most of these cocktails are only on menus for a limited time.
The Bradshaw: $19 This cocktail made its debut Wednesday night at Bemelman's private "SATC" movie premiere after-party, hosted by actress Sarah Jessica Parker, director Michael Patrick King and producer John Melfi. Inspired by Parker's iconic character, Carrie Bradshaw, The Bradshaw is a mixture of tequila, lime juice and fruit liqueur served in a martini glass rimmed with hot pink sugar. What's sweeter than that? (Bemelman's at The Carlyle; 35 E. 76th St. at Madison Avenue; 212-744-1600)
Carrie's Manolo Martini, Charlotte's Upper East Sidecar, Samantha's Kinky Caipirinha. Miranda's Power Suit Punch and Mr. Big's Big Old-Fashioned: All $14 Each of the "SATC" ladies has distinct personality traits, reflected in these cleverly named drinks at the Muse hotel's bar. New Yorkers who call themselves a "Carrie" can go for a Manolo Martini (apple schnapps, Crown Royal whisky, cranberry juice, simple syrup and effervescent POP rose), classic Charlottes, a classic Upper East Sidecar, Samanthas, an exotic caipirinha (lime, jalapeno, sugar and rum) and Mirandas a fruity punch that certainly packs some. And those classy Mr. Bigs would sip nothing but an old-fashioned. (Mini Bar at The Muse New York; 130 W. 46 Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues; 212-485-2400)
'Sex and the City' Cocktail: $25 with Pop Gold, $20 without This upscale French restaurant features a cocktail that the girls would be proud of: pretty, sexy, but low enough in calories that those designer duds will still fit perfectly. Made with mangosteen -- a very low-calorie all-natural juice -- and topped with Pop Gold -- a champagne filled with gold flakes -- (or without, if you prefer), we cannot help but wonder what better option there could be for the fit, flirty women of New York. (Bistro Chat Noir; 22 East 66th St., between Fifth and Madison avenues; 212-794-2428)
Rediscovered Cherry Cosmo: $15 A restaurant where you can easily envision Carrie and Big enjoying a tantalizing steak, STK also offers a flirty cherry drink that's irresistible The combination of black cherry vodka, Cointreau, fresh lime, white cranberry juice and dried cherry is sure to make it the drink of choice all night long. (STK ; 26 Little West 12th St., between Ninth Avenue and Washington Street; 646-624-2444)
Sambapolitan: $12 SushiSamba serves a wide array of drinks, including the martini Samantha threw in then-boyfriend Richard's face when she uttered the famous line, "Dirty martini, dirty bastard." Now, the Japanese-Brazilian fusion restaurant has created a slight twist on the "SATC" staple cosmo, this one sweetened with a little muddled watermelon. (SushiSamba; 245 Park Ave South, between 19th and 20th streets; 212-475-9377)
The Big: $40 Just like Mr. Big, everything about this drink is over-the-top. Served in an oversized martini glass, the cocktail is made with vodka, St. Germain and fresh lime juice, plus a scoop of raspberry liqueur sorbet. Fans may remember seafood restaurant Blue Water Grill from Charlotte's encounter with a seemingly chivalrous date outside. (Blue Water Grill; 31 Union Square West at 16th Street; 212-675-9500)
