Center of attention

These days, wedding planners say there are tons of interesting alternatives to plopping a large flower arrangement in the center of each table when it comes to centerpieces for your reception. Using unconventional materials in unusual ways can create a look that is fresh and stylish.

Bridget Vizoso, founder and lead designer of the Designer's Co-op, says she sometimes works with herbs like mint and plants like maidenhair ferns and hostas in place of flowers.

Right now there seems to be a simple, contemporary flair in centerpieces, says Gerald Palumbo, one of the owners of Seasons: A Floral Design Studio. He designs with everything from votives to bamboo to lanterns.

Not only are candles and trays less expensive than traditional flowers, they are more unexpected, he says.

"We've done low grass on tables and out of that just sticks coming out with candles, which is very, very clever."

If you're looking for something truly unique, go with a creation of your own: Stop by the flower stalls at the Union Square Greenmarket to pick out flowers, plants or herbs, and pick up some inexpensive pots from Chelsea Market.

You can also craft attractive centerpieces out of rock salt and candles of different heights. Another do-it-yourself option is arranging decorative glass Christmas balls in clear, glass bowls.

The possibilities are virtually endless, and the only rule is that your choice reflects your personality.
