The lure of Tahiti
Couples seek adventurous, exotic locales
Tahiti and her surrounding islands are the epitome of tropical, like a guidebook come to life. Temperatures range from 70 to 85 degrees, it has the brightest of blue seas, crystal white sands, stunning mountain ranges, waterfalls and, perhaps most of interest to honeymooners, over-water bungalows -- your own private house built on stilts that sits above calm waters.
With the advent of Air Tahiti-Nui's nonstop flights from JFK to Papeete, getting there is now affordable, too.
The most renowned and frequented Tahitian island is Bora Bora. Fast growing in popularity, the other Society Islands in Tahiti's archipelago often offer less expensive and more authentic experiences.
Services are still somewhat limited in the majority of the towns, so most tourists choose to stay at a resort. This is the best way to ensure quality food, access to excursions (snorkeling, fishing, surfing, jet skiing, tennis) and a clean haven to come home to after a day of exploring or resting on the beach.
Most resorts offer a choice of bungalow, either within plush gardens, on the beach or over the water itself. Pearl Resorts have locations on most islands and offer sophisticated spa services and royal treatment. Less promoted destinations, such as the Outrigger Resort on Huahine, offer affordable alternatives for those not needing massages or endless supplies of fresh towels and scented soaps.
