Was former child-star Amanda Bynes intentionally shoplifting a hat from the clothing store Barneys?
TMZ.com said Wednesday that Bynes -- who has exhibited erratic behavior since at least 2012 and until recently was under her mother's conservatorship -- had left the Madison Avenue branch of the upscale chain wearing a $200 hat for which she had not paid. The site said store security guards stopped her outside and brought her back in.
Bynes reportedly told the guards she was being chased by fans inside the store and grabbed the hat in order to cover her face. According to TMZ, she said she had no intention of stealing, and after signing a no-trespass agreement to not return she was released.
TMZ said four NYPD officers arrived after Bynes had left. No charges were filed.
Bynes, 28, the former star of Nickelodeon's "All That" and "The Amanda Show," was involuntarily hospitalized in July 2013 after setting a small fire in the driveway of a stranger's home in Thousand Oaks, California. In April this year she denied, through her attorney, that she suffered from schizophrenia.
