Jennifer Aniston has spoken out once more against tabloid culture and the attitudes she believes it fosters toward women.
Continuing on a theme she expounded upon in a Huffington Post essay in July and in a November interview in Marie Claire magazine, the “Office Christmas Party” star said on Wednesday’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” that both tabloids and the public “need to take responsibility on what we ingest into our brains.”
She added: “We have to stop listening to them and we have to stop buying them, because [women] have to support each other, especially at this time.”
The Emmy-winning actress said she wrote the Huffington Post Op-Ed “at first, really, for myself . . . how we write [something and] don’t necessarily send it.” But, she said, “I kind of hit a wall. I was pretty raw at the time” for reasons that included the May death of her mother, Nancy Dow.
Aniston also described returning from a vacation — referring to a June trip to the Bahamas with her husband, actor-screenwriter Justin Theroux — after tabloids had speculated from paparazzi beach photos that she was pregnant. Upon landing, “We were mobbed — like a scary kind of mobbed,” she said. “I didn’t know what was happening. I kept thinking, ‘Is Kim Kardashian behind me or something?’ Because this was very strange.”
That experience, Aniston said, echoed one involving a “photograph which I’ve had to sort of live with for the last about 10, 15 years, a picture of me with a bump and a circle around my stomach, with an arrow pointing to it in just this sort of disgustingly objectifying kind of way, and I was just fed up with it.”
Stating, “We as women do a lot of incredible things in this world other than just procreate,” she noted ironically that “women, I have to say, are many of the authors of these horrible articles that are written.”
