Kristen Stewart talks sexuality, relationship with Alicia Cargile

After being coy on the subject of her sexuality as recently as in a May interview, actress Kristen Stewart is speaking openly about her current relationship.

“I’m just really in love with my girlfriend,” the “Twilight” star, 26, said Wednesday in online excerpts from the September issue of Elle’s UK edition. Without mentioning by name Alicia Cargile, with whom Stewart has been photographed publicly since at least January 2015 as an apparently romantic couple, Stewart said, “We’ve broken up a couple of times and gotten back together, and this time I was like, ‘Finally, I can feel again.’ ”

Referring to her “Twilight” co-star Robert Pattinson, with whom she was in a three-year relationship, Stewart added: “When I was dating a guy I was hiding everything that I did because everything personal felt like it was immediately trivialized, so I didn’t like it. We were turned into these characters and placed into this ridiculous comic book, and I was like, ‘That’s mine. You’re making my relationship something that it’s not.’ I didn’t like that. But then it changed,” she said, “when I started dating a girl. I was like, ‘Actually, to hide this provides the implication that I’m not down with it or I’m ashamed of it,’ so I had to alter how I approached being in public. It opened my life up and I’m so much happier.”

She had told Variety in May regarding her current relationship that, “I’m not hiding [anything],” adding in what the magazine described as a trailing, unfinished sentence, “And I’m very obviously . . .”

Stewart, who stars in Woody Allen’s recently released “Café Society” and in the psychological horror film “Personal Shopper,” which screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May, told Elle she was “confident that life is good and I’ll be OK whatever happens. So in moments when that is cloudy and I feel saturated and unable to engage in how good life can be, however consuming those feelings are, they are so momentary.”
