Sam Champion to leave ABC for The Weather Channel in 2014

ABC’s beloved weatherman is heading to sunnier pastures.

Sam Champion is set to join The Weather Channel as a morning show anchor and managing editor for the network, after 25 years working for ABC and more than 1,800 weather forecasts for "Good Morning America," The Weather Channel said yesterday.

ikChampion, 52, will make the switch in early 2014, and will anchor a new morning show the network is set to launch.

"Sam is already one of the top names in morning television," said Weather Channel president David Clark.

Champion added: "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to do wha tI love most at a network that lives and breathes the weather."

Throughout the years with ABC, Champion has reported from polar icebergs, danced the salsa on "Despierta America" and hosted the animal rescue "Sea Rescue." He has traveled to almost every major weather event in the U.S. since signing on for GMA in 2006 and his stellar reporting during Superstorm Sandy contributed to ABC’s Peabody Award for coverage of the storm.

GMA will say goodbye to Sam in tomorrow’s show and welcome meteorologist Ginger Zee as his replacement on GMA and across ABC News.
