Tap into American classics
On Monday nights, stick around for free book readings after dinner at the Half King in Chelsea. (Photo by Victoria Schlesinger / May 10, 2006)
When you want a casual meal, or a place to eat and hang out for the night afterward, there's no better place than a pub.
Fortunately, many of the city's top spots are as serious about their menus as they are about the beers they have on tap.
Here are some of our favorite spots for food, drink and fun.
The Half King
505 W. 23rd St.
212-462-4300

About $35 for a three-course meal
Whether you order a traditional Irish breakfast from the "Late Risers" menu or go for a juicy burger, this Chelsea outpost won't disappoint -- everything is made from scratch. Other favorites include fish and chips, beef and Guinness casserole, and shepherd's pie. Dining is available in the garden, barroom or dining room amid a sparse 18th-century decor.
Kinsale Tavern
1672 Third Ave.
212-348-4370

About $20 for a three-course meal
Many Upper East Siders go to the Kinsale for an Irish breakfast of fried eggs, grilled tomatoes, rashers, sausage, baked beans, black and white pudding, mushrooms, fries and toast; others go for the slow-cooked corned beef sandwich. The menu also offers shepherd's pie, burgers and daily specials.
P.J. Clarke's
