Aaron Carter and Hilary Duff, and more celebrity couples we wish would get back together
The year 2000 called: It wants its gossip back.
Hilary Duff and Aaron Carter are making headlines-- yes, you read that right-- because the teen heartthrob of yesteryear has proclaimed his undying love for his former squeeze.
As Lizzie McGuire would say, this is what dreams are made of.
In a well-timed tweet, soon after Duff split from hockey player husband (and father of her almost-2-year-old son) Mike Comrie, Carter posted a present-day photo of her and wrote "Don't be that stupid douche that loses the love of your life forever..Like me..."
Fans immediately went crazy, and who can blame them? This out-of-the-blue throwback transports us to a magical time when hair crimping was socially acceptable and pop stars were so wholesome and sweet they actually sang about candy.
"I'll spend the rest of my life trying to better myself to get back to her," Carter continued. "I don't care what ANY of you think."
Duff has not responded via social media, so there's no telling if this reunion has a shot, but that got us thinking... what other celebrity couples did we never quite get over?
Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake
Let's be honest, you knew you'd find these two here. From young love in the Mickey Mouse Club to super-stardom as pop music's royal couple, they had it all-- matching denim outfits included. Need we say more? The world would be a whole lot different if Brit and JT were still an item. Sigh. (Credit: Lucy Nicholson/AFP/Getty Images)
Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey
She didn't know the difference between tuna and chicken, and he loved her anyway. And they were just sooo pretty. At least we'll always have "Newlyweds." (Credit: Getty Images / Frederick M. Brown)
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams
These two gave us hope that love as seen in "The Notebook" existed in real life... and then they stomped on our hearts and took it all away. Pass the tissues, please. (Credit: Getty Images / Michael Buckner)
Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson
Geeky guy lands the popular girl... this "O.C." connection was the dream romance of teenagers everywhere-- on and off screen. That's why we'll always hold a special place in our hearts for Seth Cohen and Summer Roberts. (Credit: Getty Images / Amanda Edwards)
Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens
Seriously, what would you give to hear them sing "Start of Something New" together just one more time? (Credit: Getty Images / David Livingston)
Blake Lively and Penn Badgley
Oh, you watched "Gossip Girl" and didn't want Serena and Dan to beat the odds in real life? What does it feel like to have no soul? (Credit: Getty Images / Kevin C. Cox)
Lauren Conrad and Brody Jenner
This match made in "The Hills" heaven only lasted for a hot second, but hey, we can dream. (Credit: Getty Images / Michael Buckner)
Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr
OK fine, we're just thankful these two had the chance to reproduce. (Credit: Getty Images/ Stephen Lovekin)
Jennifer Lopez and P. Diddy
She was Jenny from the Block, he was Puff Daddy... and all was right with the world. (Credit: Getty Images/AFP/Henny Ray Abrams)
Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal
Because looking at photos of Jake putting Reese in a bear hug was almost as cathartic as watching videos of golden retriever puppies cuddling on YouTube. (Credit: Getty Images / Frazer Harrison)
Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt
Before Brangelina and their six kids, there was just Brad and Jen, Hollywood's golden couple. Ah, simpler times. (Credit: Getty Images / Francois Guillot)
Demi Moore and Bruce Willis
Ashton who? We know he's re-married, but we wish Demi could give Bruce another shot. He's been such a good sport through it all. (Credit: Getty Images/AFP/Patrick Hertzog)
Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley
Yes, the "Piano Man" has had three wives, but no one was like Christie. They've stayed friendly over the years, so you never know... (Credit: Getty Images/AFP/Paul J. Richards)
