A weekend in Annapolis, Maryland
Exterior of The Georgian House.
The 18th-century town of Annapolis, with its waterfront, its cobbled streets, and its historic buildings, makes a fine place for a weekend away.
The Georgian House, in the heart of the old town, has been around for 250 years -- almost as long as the country has. The graceful brick building has a complicated pedigree, having served both as a school and a private home. But 1759 was probably its glory year -- when a forensic club was organized, which became something of a gathering place for radicals of the day. Among its members were three rebels who went on to sign the Declaration of Independence.
Today, the house offers guest rooms nicely furnished with antiques. Breakfast is on a grand scale, with house-made pastries and breads as well as fruit, juice, and a hot entree. (170 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis; 800-557-2068 or 410-263-5618. Rates range from $185 for a king room to $205 for a suite.)
WHAT TO DO: Visit the Naval Academy, where you can see the "Freedom 7," America's first manned spacecraft, flown by Naval Academy graduate Alan Shepard as well as walk along the river, admiring the grounds. The state house, completion in 1779., is the oldest in the United States; tours are available. But the most satisfying thing to see is the city itself, wander the perfectly restored streets, and then walk down to the harborside, which is lively with shops, galleries, restaura nts, and cafes.
WHERE TO EAT: Buddy's Crabs and Ribs. On the second floor, the restaurant has a casual vibe and a view of the water; specialty of the house is crab in its many forms (what else? ). But the ribs are also recommended. (Expect to pay about $35-$40 per person; 100 Main Street; 410-626-1100. )
