Someone tweeted an alternate ending to "Friends" that's blowing the minds of the '90s sitcom's fans.
On May 6, 2004, the world said goodbye to Monica, Chandler, Ross, Rachel, Joey and Phoebe in the show's finale. The six friends locked up Monica's apartment and joked about where to grab a cup of coffee as they closed that purple door behind them one last time.
In a reply to Comedy Central's announcement of a "Friends" marathon, the Twitter user (who goes by Xenophon Moscrop) wrote that the show should have ended by revealing none of it ever really happened. The "incredibly dark ending" was first spotted by BuzzFeed UK.
It was all the "fantasy of a homeless Phoebe as she stared through the window of Central Perk," the theory read. "All 10 seasons were merely her fevered imagination, projecting herself into the lives of the other 5."
Moscrop insists the theory makes sense because all Phoebe "ever wanted was... friends," hence the show's title.
The final scene is described as Phoebe walking away from the famous coffee shop with the five other friends (who would have all had different names, lives and personalities) glaring at the "'crazy cat lady'" who often stared at them while they enjoyed their morning coffee.
Naturally, the mind-blowing ending would have been pretty frustrating to fans who followed the show for 10 seasons and fell in love with the dynamic of the six Manhattan friends.
So far, @strnks has Tweeted the alternate ending idea more than once, each time receiving thousands of retweets, likes and replies from fans, even though most people just say how sad and emotional this variation on their favorite show has made them.
