Samantha Bee, one of the sturdy pillars of "The Daily Show" for over a dozen years now, is leaving to produce a comedy series for TBS. No specifics except that...her new show does sound a little -- actually a lot -- like the one she'll be leaving...
Per TBS, "The new show, which is in the early stages of development, is being planned as a platform for Bee to apply her smart and satirical point of view to current and relevant issues. In addition to hosting, Bee will serve as executive producer on the show, along with Jones..."
"Jones," of course, is her husband, Jason Jones, also leaving "TDS" for a series development deal at TBS -- of which Bee is also a co-producer. As such, this departure isn't entirely unexpected, because -- when reports first surfaced that Jones would be heading to TBS, speculation quickly followed that she would not be around all that much longer either.
Unclear exactly when she will leave "TDS" where she has been a correspondent since '03. Bee's one of this classic's key players -- and even managed to arouse the ire of some Long Islanders a half a dozen years ago when she memorably spoofed an LI-succession movement.
Because of longevity and talent, Bee's name logically surfaced on "possible successor" lists after Jon Stewart announced he will step down, probably sometime this fall.
Here's more from TBS:
"We're thrilled to have Sam join Jason at TBS and really make this a family affair. We actually have their kids coming in next week to pitch us animation," joked Brett Weitz, executive vice president of original programming for TBS. "Like her fans around the country, we absolutely adore everything about Sam, from her straight-faced sarcasm and ruthless wit to her uncanny ability to mine comedy gold from just about any awkward situation. After watching Sam's work for years, we knew that her distinctive humor and talent belong at the front of her own show."
