Shemar Moore, who made a surprise departure from CBS’ “Criminal Minds” last March, is now making a surprise return to the series.

CBS announced on Thursday that the actor will reprise his role as Derek Morgan, one of the agents with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), on the May 10 season finale of the crime procedural. In the episode, Moore’s character will provide the BAU team with a lead in the case against serial killer and escaped convict Mr. Scratch.

Moore left the series last March after 11 seasons in an episode that found Morgan resigning from the BAU. CBS had not publicized the actor’s final appearance, which came unexpectedly to viewers. After the episode, Moore shared a farewell video with fans in which he said, “This is not ‘goodbye’ but goodbye to this part of the dream.”

The actor, who had also appeared on “The Young and the Restless,” said he was leaving “Criminal Minds” to pursue other endeavors.
