More than 23 million people tuned in to see "Saturday Night Live's" stars and a who's who of celebrities gather for the show's 40th anniversary Sunday night.
They special was the highest-viewed prime time show Sunday night, according to Nielsen.. The special featured skits with current cast members and former stars like Tina Fey, Dan Aykroyd, and Eddie Murphy, who returned to the show for the first time in 31 years.
Past celebrities who hosted such as Tom Hanks, Betty White and Justin Timberlake, were also on hand for the sketches. The three-and-a-half hour show also includedl performances by Paul McCartney, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West and Paul Simon.
The special's jokes also surged on Twitter where it was the most tweeted TV program of the week, according to Nielsen.
About 449,000 people posted about 1.3 million tweets during the show.
