Spencer Pratt, Heidi Montag dish on 'The Hills' production
Confirming long-standing reports that the MTV reality show "The Hills" was largely scripted, Spencer Pratt and his wife and co-star, Heidi Montag, described production trickery in interviews Monday on their E! special, "After Shock: Heidi and Spencer."
"I don't think we've ever gotten to be the real Heidi and Spencer on TV," Pratt, 30, said on the hourlong program. As an example he recalled a scene in which he told Montag to leave his car after she rejected his offer to move in together.
"We shot like 14 or 15 takes of that from different angles," he said. "And then she got back in my car, and we drove off."
When shooting their 2009 wedding for the show -- a 2006-2010 spinoff of "Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County" -- producers tried pushing a story line that involved Pratt leaving her at the altar, Montag recalled. Despite producers' two hours of pleading, the couple refused to go along and the wedding went forward as planned.
Pratt, who had a reputation as being quick to anger, both on the show and in real life, said he is still heckled and even attacked by people on the street. This has made him reluctant to start a family. "I wouldn't want to be Spencer Pratt's kid," he said, concerned that his child would be a target for bullies. "I'd have a kid if there was no Google or YouTube."
The couple, married four years, live in Santa Barbara, Calif., Us Weekly said. Pratt is finishing a degree in political science at the University of Southern California.
