Sartorial splash in BK
A model for Brooklyn Fashion Week[End] (March 17, 2008)
The world's top fashion designers have no problem finding exposure for their latest creations -- whether it's Fashion Week here in the city last month or in Paris two weeks ago.
But what about those (still-talented) designers who aren't ready for the financial commitment that an international fashion week represents? That's where Brooklyn Fashion Week[End] comes in. Now in its fifth season, the show this weekend aims to promote underground designers. We talked with the event's founder and producer Rick Davy.
Are you trying to position BK Fashion Week[End] as an alternative or something similar to other fashion weeks? We tried to position ours a little bit after New York Fashion Week, a little after the L.A. Fashion Week. We come when everybody's a little bit settled down and has come back to New York after running around the globe. They can come in and enjoy some of the independent designers in Brooklyn.
Is there a specific sensibility to the your show? At the inception, the mission was to support independent designers, to [involve] independent artists and to bring them together at the show.
Are the bulk of your designers from Brooklyn or is the event just named after the location where it's held? It's just named after where it's held, like New York Fashion Week or L.A. Fashion Week. But initially it did start off with the idea of promoting young emerging designers in Brooklyn. We decided to open it up and make it a little bit more accessible to everyone, more independent, and we have more independent and risk-taking designers who are looking for something new.
Who is your audience? It's really a very mixed audience. We try to invite as many buyers from the small boutiques so that the designers could have access to that. We try to invite as much press as we can, so the designers will have access to that. And some celebrities.
The event this weekend is only open to invited guests. If you can't score an invite, you can at least check out the up-and-comers represented at the show.
