  • How to pay for networking events

    Yes, we know that attending educational seminars and networking events is a major job-search tool, but how to pay for those events when there’s no paycheck coming in?

    Dawn Jordan, a former bank vice president now in the job market, poses that question in posts to the Laid Off and Looking blog on the Wall Street Journal site and the LinkedIn blog.

    “My challenge isn’t a lack of time, interest or need to attend these networking functions,” she writes. “It is lack of money.” In her case registration fees could reach $400 and up a month, but she says she’s allotting no more than $200 a month.

    You’ll find some helpful suggestions in the comment sections of both blog posts, including:

    --Check with your alma mater as schools often run lower-cost events;

    --Set up your own networking group at a public library;

    --And this from Jordan -- look to better leverage social networking tools like LinkedIn.com and MeetUp.com
