From the Los Angeles Times

John M. Arthur
Executive Editor

Arthur came to the paper in 1986 in the Times Orange County Edition, where he was city editor and managing editor during a period of major expansion. In 1992 he moved to the National Desk as an assistant national editor. He became editor of the Times Valley Edition in 1993, also during a period of expansion. In 1997 he was named one of the newspaper's four managing editors, with responsibility for the Valley, Orange County and Ventura editions, oversight of the Travel and Sports sections and the Times National Edition and paper-wide production issues.

While in the Valley, Arthur was involved in coverage of the Northridge earthquake and the North Hollywood shootout. Both stories won Pulitzer Prizes.

From 2000-05, Arthur was the Deputy Page 1 Editor / Nights.

Arthur grew up in New York and lived for 20 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he worked for the Pittsburg (Calif.) Post-Dispatch and the San Francisco Examiner.
