Brooklyn developments spruce up borough’s hottest neighborhoods

It’s no secret that many people across the city and beyond are in search of a gem to call home in Brooklyn.

There’s a reason, obviously, for the borough’s rising rents and overall transformation.

To meet those needs, developers and urban planners continue to tap into neighborhoods that are close to Manhattan, such as Downtown Brooklyn, Greenpoint and Williamsburg, and are creating new buildings in historic areas like Fort Greene, Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill, according to experts.

“There is a moment of readjustment that is going on in the outer boroughs. The right side of the East River is looking like the left side,” said Kevin Hom, dean of the school of technology and design at New York City College of Technology.

Hom said the Bloomberg and de Blasio administrations both have advocated and put in policies that streamlined development in the borough. He added that de Blasio’s push for affordable housing also could spur real estate firms to look into offering more options to less affluent New Yorkers.

“I suspect smaller developers will start coming back into the equation and create buildings that offer affordable units,” Hom said.
