City tanning salons to face stricter regulations

If you’re planning on getting your artificial tan, be prepared for changes.

The city’s Health Dept. unanimously voted Wednesday to regulate tanning salons and shops. Under the regulation, that goes into effect in six months, stores will have to bar customers under 17, require users to use protective goggles and make store owners post signage about the health risks of artificial tanning beds near the machines.

Health experts have expressed concern over tanning beds and their link to skin cancer and other problems.

“We believe that with this order in place, we will all stand a better chance of reducing indoor tanning behaviors, thereby reducing incidence of the world’s most common cancer — now occurring at epidemic levels,” Dr. Perry Robins, the founder of the nonprofit the Skin Care Foundation, said in a statement.
