H&M, Paul Mitchell, more celebrate Earth Day by donating, planting trees

Americans are still torn when it comes to going green. While one in three (33 percent) agrees that environmentally friendly products are worthwhile investments, nearly one in four (24 percent) contends they cannot afford to live a green lifestyle.

Such is the conflicted state of affairs revealed in a survey of more than 1,000 adults conducted in January by RetailMeNot, a leading online resource for consumer discounts and coupons in a variety of categories, from fashion and beauty to electronics and gadgets.

But with the coming of another Earth Day, the annual celebration of all things eco-friendly, an increasing number of brands are striving to show consumers that sustainability and style can go hand-in-hand — and at a reasonable price.

Take H&M, which this month unveiled its annual Conscious Exclusive collection of dresses, separates, shoes and more, inspired by clothing found in the Louvre archives, but constructed of organic silk, hemp, recycled linen, and Denimite, a new material (H&M is the first fashion company to use it) made from worn-out used denim.

“It’s great to be able to have clothes that are both sustainable and red-carpet-ready,” says French model Julia Restoin Roitfeld, who serves as the face for the campaign.

Forget the red carpet. The apparel and accessories we’ve gathered here — from H&M and a host of other brands — look great no matter where you’re headed.
