The first ever "Urban Mudder," a scaled back, reconfigured version of the famously messy and muscle-taxing "Tough Mudder" obstacle course, is coming July 25 to Randall's Island.
The Urban Mudder will feature 5 miles (scaled back from Tough Mudder's 10 to 12 miles) of 12 to 15 obstacles designed to encourage team work and camaraderie.
New challenges include a "rooftop series" in which participants scale brick walls, hurtle between platforms and fling themselves into giant air bags. A "laser minefield" will involve "Mission Impossible"-like contortions to avoid breaking a beam in a field of lasers and the "6 Feet Over" involves leaping into the outstretched hand of teammates.
As the first "Urban Mudder" event in the world, the Randall's Island shindig will be a more "festival-like party," with DJs and street performers, food trucks and a beer garden, according to a spokeswoman.
Registration will be limited to 1,000 people. More than 95% of participants register as part of a team according to Tough Mudder. Participants can sign up on urbanmudder.com.
Begun in 2010, Tough Mudder challenges now include Mudderella, the Fruit Shoot Mini Mudder and World's Toughest Mudder.
