A Maryland court has granted an appeal to Adnan Syed, the subject of the wildly popular "Serial" podcast.
The decision by the Maryland Court of Special Appeals overturns a Baltimore circuit court opinion in January, which denied his motion to appeal his conviction on the grounds of an inadequate attorney.
Syed, 33, is serving a life sentence for the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, when they were both seniors at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore. Syed has maintained his innocence since his conviction in 2000, and "Serial" examined the case in-depth. An earlier appeal a few years ago was denied.
"It's the first step in a pretty long process but we're extremely happy," Syed's attorney, C. Justin Brown, told the Baltimore Sun.
