Belt Parkway crash kills driver, injures passengers, after slamming into pole

A car crashed into a light pole on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn early Monday, killing the driver and injuring his two passengers, police said.

A 21-year-old man was driving a Nissan Maxima west on the parkway just after 1 a.m. when he lost control trying to exit at Erskine Street near Gateway Center and slammed into the pole.

The driver, who was not immediately identified pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 19-year-old woman sitting in the front passenger seat was taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition, suffering from leg and hip injuries. The 27-year-old man, who was sitting in the backseat, was also taken to Brookdale in critical condition with a head injury, police said.
