Curtis Johnson, off-duty NYPD officer, killed in motorcycle accident
An off-duty NYPD officer riding a motorcycle was killed in a multivehicle accident in Queens during Monday's evening rush hour, police said.
The accident in Jamaica happened just before 5 p.m. on Linden Boulevard when a westbound car trying to turn south onto 158th Street collided with the eastbound motorcyclist, an NYPD spokesman said.
The off-duty officer, identified by police as Curtis Johnson, 28, was thrown off his bike, which then slammed into a vehicle behind the first one in the accident, police said.
Johnson was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, police said.
Several officers, some in plainclothes, started to cry and comfort one another outside the emergency room ambulance bay. They declined to speak.
An officer who knew Johnson said he was a stand-up guy who always had a smile on his face.
The officer's hometown and precinct were not immediately available. No other details were immediately available, including whether others were injured, police said.
