A New York City Police officer shot and killed a knife-wielding Brooklyn man who police say lunged at them while armed with several knives Friday night, police said.
Denis Volchkin, 28, of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, was involved in a "family dispute" with his 54-year-old mother, who called police about 5:35 p.m. to report her son had "choked" her, police said.
When police arrived, Volchkin was gone. But his mother, whom police did not identify, called 911 again about 7:12 p.m. and told police her son had returned and was "armed with several knives," police said.
The same uniformed officers returned to the scene and encountered Volchkin in the living room.
"Upon seeing the uniformed officers, the suspect advanced towards them brandishing knives," police said.
The officers backed away from Volchkin while giving verbal commands for him to drop the knife, police said. Volchkin "did not comply with police commands and lunged at the officers," according to the NYPD.
One of the two officers discharged his firearm one time, striking the Volchkin in the chest, police said.
Volchkin was taken to Coney Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The two officers were transported to Lutheran Medical Center for tinnitus, or ringing in the ears.
No one answered the phone Saturday morning at Volchkin's Brooklyn home.
Celebrity website TMZ.com reported that Volchkin was "punched" in the face and subdued by a bodyguard for Jonathan Cheban, a celebrity publicist and close friend of reality star Kim Kardashian, in May after Volchkin heckled Cheban at a Brooklyn sushi restaurant. TMZ said Volchkin was armed with a knife during that altercation.
It's unclear whether the bodyguard was charged. An NYPD spokesman would not confirm Volchkin's involvement in that incident.
Cheban is a regular on "Keeping Up With the Kardashians."
