Those winning numbers show up on your ticket, and you’ve got no clue what to do besides go into a state of literal shock. What happens next? Although the idea might seem really far-fetched, it’s important to know what steps to take if the odds end up being in your favor.

We contacted Carolyn Hapemen, a spokesperson for the New York Lottery, to see to do if you score those six winning numbers. Here they are:

1. Before you do anything else: Sign the back of your ticket. That’s the most important step to take.

2. After you’ve signed it, you should claim it. This way you don’t have to worry about hiding it or losing it. The safest place that it will be is with the lottery.

3. If you’re confused on the next steps to take, you can call the lottery and they will help walk you through the process of finding your own financial advisor or attorney. The lottery cannot actually tell you what to do with your money because it is more of an independent thing. But they can surely assist you in taking those next steps.

4. Once you’ve find a trustworthy advisor and attorney, you can then work together to find the best ways to manage your money.
