Top problems for Mexicans

The outreach group, Movement for Justice in El Barrio, polled 784 immigrants last summer on what the top problems were in the community. Here is what they said:

1. Immigration laws

2. Service from the Mexican consulate. Many Mexicans lack IDs, relying on the consulate for the "matricula," an identification card issued by the Mexican government. Hundreds of people used spend the night outside the consulate on East 39th Street to get those services, but changes since mean service has improved somewhat, but the issue remains capacity.

3. The lack of jobs that pay that minimum wage, getting paid below the minimum wage, or -- for that matter -- never getting paid overtime.
