Sheep found in Central Park

A sheep was found in Central Park Tuesday night -- in Sheep Meadow, no less.

The animal, its four legs tied, was found in the 15-acre section named after the flock of sheep that grazed on the lawn until 1934. No one knows who left it there, said Ruth Martinez, the driver for the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals who rescued it.

Martinez was alerted to the sheep by Animal Care and Control. The sheep is now safe at a farm in Southport, Conn.

The bizarre incident is but the latest hairy ride by the van the Mayor's Alliance operates. The van has also transported roosters and chicken to foster farms and gladly offers its wheels to any animal in need of a ride.

"If animal control needs help transporting a sheep or rabbits, we are happy," said Mayor's Alliance president Jane Hoffman.
