Green-Wood, A Cemetery Rich in History

Green-Wood Cemetery is set on 478 acres on the highest hill in Brooklyn, which also was the site of the Revolutionary War's Battle of Brooklyn.

Founded in 1838, it is the final resting place of many famous New Yorkers including Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Morse, Louis Comfort Tiffany and Henry Ward Beecher.

Almost 600,000 people are buried in the beautiful, park-like setting of the cemetery, filled with trees, shrubs and four man-made lakes.

The cemetery is filled with mausoleums, monuments and ornate masonry. It includes a recently restored memorial to soldiers from Brooklyn who were killed in the Civil War.

In the 1850s, Green-Wood was a leading tourist destination and it remains a popular site for walking tours because of its rich history and natural beauty.
