MetroCard machines ready for fare hike
Transit employees have been working to program MetroCard machines and turnstiles for the fare hike since the MTA board voted for increases in December, officials said.
New software was written and has been tested to download into a central computer, which in turn will transmit the new fare information to all the MetroCard vending machines, turnstiles and token booth computers throughout the system, transit officials explained. Transit employees will then test each of them to ensure the new fare information was downloaded properly. The testing will likely go round-the-clock at the end of the week.
The software is time-sensitive and will automatically take effect at the start of the hike on Sunday, officials said.
