Board likely to strip members of E-Z Passes

After weeks of controversy and temper tantrums, the MTA board Wednesday is expected to revoke E-Z Passes for its former members and limit the current ones to using them only for work purposes.

The board is expected to vote its approval for the action, although as recently as Monday board members showed their displeasure by joking about the allegations that they received illegal compensation by getting E-Z Passes.

During a committee meeting presentation on tunneling work, the board was handed a box of rocks taken from deep below Manhattan. They were encouraged to take one as a souvenir. "I wanted to take one of those as a paperweight but I'm afraid I might get in trouble for taking something from the MTA," joked board member Nancy Shevell, as she passed the rocks down the boardroom table.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who said the board and its former members were breaking the law by receiving compensation in the form of some 59 E-Z Passes, pressed for the change in policy.
