Highlights
A warning is an advisory that bad weather may be headed your way. A weather warning or advisory helps us prepare for bad weather; hurricanes, tornadoes, powerful thunderstorms and squalls, or flood situations among others. Most everyone along the Southeastern coast of the United States is familiar with the different categories the weather service uses to measure hurricane strength. In the West and Southwest, residents got another lesson this summer in the wind and heat indexes forecasters used to warn against spreading forest fires. In the Midwest and Northeast, snow, tornado and heat advisories are not unusual.

The source of all official weather information for the United States comes from the National Weather Service, run under the auspices of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). As the "sole official voice of the U.S. Government for issuing warnings during life-threatening weather situations," the National Weather Service keeps track of local and regional forecasts and broadcasts alerts if necessary in case of severe storms, tornadoes, floods and even solar flares.
Forecasts typically reflect current conditions as well as five-day outlooks. The NWS also provides information from a host of different perspectives. Climate mapping shows high and low temperatures at myriad locations across the nation. Satellite pictures and Doppler radar show cloud cover and precipitation conditions. Air quality maps show ozone levels. Water maps reflect rain gauge information from all 50 states.
